El Buho Especial 6-Year Extra Añejo Mezcal

Elevate your collection with a spirit that defies expectations.

El Buho Especial 6-Year Extra Añejo represents the pinnacle of patience and craftsmanship. While most mezcals are celebrated for their raw, youthful smoke, this limited expression undergoes an extraordinary aging process that bridges the gap between the rugged landscapes of Oaxaca and the refined elegance of a world-class cognac.

Crafted from 100% Espadín agave and aged for six full years in charred American oak barrels, this mezcal is a masterclass in balance. The intense heat of the Oaxacan sun is tempered by half a decade of slumber, resulting in a spirit of remarkable depth, silkiness, and complexity.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: Deep, polished mahogany with heavy, slow-moving legs that coat the glass.
  • Aroma: An inviting bouquet of dark chocolate, toasted almond, and dried black cherries. The signature Espadín smoke is present but whispers in the background, overtaken by rich notes of vanilla bean and old leather.
  • Palate: Velvety and full-bodied. Initial flavors of caramelized agave and butterscotch transition into complex layers of baking spices (cinnamon and clove) and a hint of roasted coffee grounds.
  • Finish: Exceptionally long and warming. The smoke returns as a delicate mesquite ember, lingering alongside a sweet, woody resonance and a touch of citrus peel.

Why It’s SpecialFeature

  • Agave Type: 100% Espadín (Estate Grown)
  • Aging: 6 Years in Charred American Oak
  • Region: Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca

Best Enjoyed

Neat in a Glencairn or snifter; no ice required.Pro Tip: Pair this Extra Añejo with a piece of high-quality dark chocolate (70% cocoa or higher) to unlock the spirit's hidden notes of dried fruit and spice.

What is the difference between Tequila & Mezcal?

Tequila is a type of mezcal, much like how scotch and bourbon are types of whiskey.

Tequila and mezcal are both types of agave-based spirits that are popular in Mexico, but there are some key differences between the two. Tequila is made exclusively from the blue agave plant, which is primarily grown in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, about 40 miles northwest of Guadalajara. Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from any type of agave plant, and is often made using traditional, labor-intensive methods.

One of the most noticeable differences between tequila and mezcal is their flavor. Tequila is typically smooth and subtle, with hints of fruit and spices, while mezcal has a more complex, smoky flavor that comes from the roasting of the agave hearts before they are fermented and distilled.

Another difference between the two spirits is their production process. Tequila is typically made using modern industrial methods, while mezcal is often produced using traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. This can give mezcal a more authentic, artisanal character.

In general, tequila is considered to be a more refined and sophisticated spirit, while mezcal is often viewed as a more rustic and traditional drink. Both are popular in Mexico and are enjoyed around the world, so the best way to decide which one you like is to try them both and see which one suits your tastes.
