Dr. Bürklin-Wolf Wachenheim "R" Riesling Trocken
The Rare "Reserve" Expression of Pfalz Terroir
While Dr. Bürklin-Wolf is globally renowned for its Grand Cru (G.C.) and Premier Cru (P.C.) sites, the "R" (Reserve) represents a special philosophy within the estate. This is not your standard village wine; it is a meticulously aged, small-batch Riesling that bridges the gap between the vibrant energy of Wachenheim and the profound complexity typically reserved for the world's greatest white wines.
The "R" is a selection of fruit from Premier Cru vineyards in Wachenheim (such as Böhlig and Gerümpel) that undergoes an extraordinary 30-month élevage in traditional 2,400-liter Doppelstück wooden barrels. This extended time on the lees allows the wine to find a state of "calm" and textural depth that is rarely seen in dry Riesling.
The Biodynamic Pioneer
Dr. Bürklin-Wolf has been a leader in Certified Biodynamic farming since 2005. By focusing on the health of the soil, a complex mix of clay, limestone, loam, and sand, they produce Rieslings with incredible structural integrity and a distinct "voice" of the Pfalz region.
Tasting Notes: Texture, Tension, and Time
- Aroma: An intense and evolving bouquet. It opens with smoky lees and flinty minerals, moving into ripe stone fruits like apricot and yellow peach, with nuanced hints of sage, lemon zest, and a touch of honeycomb.
- Palate: Remarkable textural complexity. It is full-bodied yet weightless, offering a powerful core of saline minerality and savory depth. The 30 months in oak provide a creamy, rounded mouthfeel without sacrificing the "steely spike" of acidity that defines the variety.
- Finish: Long, powerful, and bone-dry. The finish is characterized by a "finely tannic" grip and a lingering citrus-oil persistence.
Why the "R" Matters
The beauty of the "R" is that Dr. Bürklin-Wolf has done the waiting for you. While many top-tier Rieslings require years of cellar aging to shed their youthful austerity, this Reserve is released only when it has achieved a perfect harmony of fruit, secondary yeast character, and structural maturity.

What is the difference between Tequila & Mezcal?
Tequila is a type of mezcal, much like how scotch and bourbon are types of whiskey.
Tequila and mezcal are both types of agave-based spirits that are popular in Mexico, but there are some key differences between the two. Tequila is made exclusively from the blue agave plant, which is primarily grown in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, about 40 miles northwest of Guadalajara. Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from any type of agave plant, and is often made using traditional, labor-intensive methods.
One of the most noticeable differences between tequila and mezcal is their flavor. Tequila is typically smooth and subtle, with hints of fruit and spices, while mezcal has a more complex, smoky flavor that comes from the roasting of the agave hearts before they are fermented and distilled.
Another difference between the two spirits is their production process. Tequila is typically made using modern industrial methods, while mezcal is often produced using traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. This can give mezcal a more authentic, artisanal character.
In general, tequila is considered to be a more refined and sophisticated spirit, while mezcal is often viewed as a more rustic and traditional drink. Both are popular in Mexico and are enjoyed around the world, so the best way to decide which one you like is to try them both and see which one suits your tastes.
