Del Maguey Arroqueño Santa Catarina Minas Mezcal

An ancestral masterpiece from the "mother" of agaves.

Del Maguey Arroqueño is a rare, limited-release expression produced in the famous village of Santa Catarina Minas, Oaxaca. This mezcal is crafted from the giant semi-wild Arroqueño agave (Agave americana), which can take nearly two decades, up to 18 to 25 years, to reach maturity in the ground. As the genetic predecessor to the more common Espadín, the Arroqueño maguey offers a massive scale and an unparalleled depth of complexity.

True to the ancestral traditions of Santa Catarina Minas, this spirit is produced using methods that pre-date modern copper stills. The agave hearts are roasted in subterranean pits, crushed by hand using wooden mallets or bats, and fermented with only airborne wild yeasts. The most distinctive feature is its distillation: it is twice-distilled very slowly in ancient clay stills with bamboo tubing, a process that imparts a unique "clay-pot" minerality and a soft, velvety texture.

Tasting Notes

  • Aroma: Deeply complex and sweet on the nose, featuring notes of toasted tropical fruit, creme brulee, and soft clay. Some expressions reveal an intense "banana diesel" character or a bouquet of granite and fig.
  • Palate: The mouthfeel is rich and coating. It leads with luscious notes of ripe melon (specifically cantaloupe) and honeysuckle, balanced by a sophisticated background of baking chocolate. There is a pronounced vegetal quality reminiscent of fresh green beans and garden herbs.
  • Finish: A savory, medium-to-long finish that highlights dark cocoa, earth, and a lingering minerality. Subtle hints of grapefruit bitterness and a very mild, dry smoke round out the experience.

Note: This special edition has previously been dedicated to the famous biologist and explorer Thor Heyerdahl, chronicler of the Kon-Tiki voyage.

Experience one of the most bold and well-balanced mezcals in the Del Maguey collection—a true celebration of Oaxacan terroir and ancestral craftsmanship.

What is the difference between Tequila & Mezcal?

Tequila is a type of mezcal, much like how scotch and bourbon are types of whiskey.

Tequila and mezcal are both types of agave-based spirits that are popular in Mexico, but there are some key differences between the two. Tequila is made exclusively from the blue agave plant, which is primarily grown in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, about 40 miles northwest of Guadalajara. Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from any type of agave plant, and is often made using traditional, labor-intensive methods.

One of the most noticeable differences between tequila and mezcal is their flavor. Tequila is typically smooth and subtle, with hints of fruit and spices, while mezcal has a more complex, smoky flavor that comes from the roasting of the agave hearts before they are fermented and distilled.

Another difference between the two spirits is their production process. Tequila is typically made using modern industrial methods, while mezcal is often produced using traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. This can give mezcal a more authentic, artisanal character.

In general, tequila is considered to be a more refined and sophisticated spirit, while mezcal is often viewed as a more rustic and traditional drink. Both are popular in Mexico and are enjoyed around the world, so the best way to decide which one you like is to try them both and see which one suits your tastes.
