De Matachines Lamparillo Agave Spirit 750ML
45% ABV
De Matachines Lamparillo is a distinctive, artisanal agave spirit crafted in the heart of Durango, Northern Mexico, from the unique wild Lamparillo agave (Agave asperrima). The name "Matachines" pays tribute to the ceremonial dancers of Mexico, reflecting the spirit's deep connection to cultural tradition.
This Lamparillo is an uncertified mezcal, crafted using traditional methods that yield a truly singular expression of the Durango terroir. The agave is cooked in an earthen oven, mashed by hand with an axe, fermented in cedarwood vats with natural yeast, and distilled in a traditional Durango-style copper still with an oak cone condenser. This painstaking process, often involving wild-harvested agave from the high desert of Mapimí, Durango, yields a complex, savory, and intensely flavorful spirit.
A must-try for mezcal enthusiasts seeking a rare and authentic taste of Northern Mexican agave heritage.
Tasting Notes:
- Aroma: A complex and inviting nose, often displaying a unique mix of sweet fruits (like raspberry and blueberry) with deeper, savory vegetal and earthy notes. Look for hints of roasted sweet potato, fennel, cedar, and a subtle black pepper spice.
- Palate: The initial taste is often bright and herbaceous, with a striking balance of vegetal notes (such as green peppers or jalapeño), black pepper, and a delicate mineral quality. Followed by a developing sweetness—like cooked agave nectar, honey, or even sweet onion—with a noticeable lactic or creamy texture.
- Finish: Long and satisfying, with a pleasant warmth. Notes of pine, a gentle smokiness, lingering spice, and a dry, salty minerality typically round out the experience.

What is the difference between Tequila & Mezcal?
Tequila is a type of mezcal, much like how scotch and bourbon are types of whiskey.
Tequila and mezcal are both types of agave-based spirits that are popular in Mexico, but there are some key differences between the two. Tequila is made exclusively from the blue agave plant, which is primarily grown in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, about 40 miles northwest of Guadalajara. Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from any type of agave plant, and is often made using traditional, labor-intensive methods.
One of the most noticeable differences between tequila and mezcal is their flavor. Tequila is typically smooth and subtle, with hints of fruit and spices, while mezcal has a more complex, smoky flavor that comes from the roasting of the agave hearts before they are fermented and distilled.
Another difference between the two spirits is their production process. Tequila is typically made using modern industrial methods, while mezcal is often produced using traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. This can give mezcal a more authentic, artisanal character.
In general, tequila is considered to be a more refined and sophisticated spirit, while mezcal is often viewed as a more rustic and traditional drink. Both are popular in Mexico and are enjoyed around the world, so the best way to decide which one you like is to try them both and see which one suits your tastes.
