Dartigalongue X.O. Bas-Armagnac (40% ABV)

Experience the classic finesse of Gascony with Dartigalongue X.O. Bas-Armagnac. As the oldest continuous Armagnac house, Dartigalongue upholds a tradition dating back to 1838. This X.O. (Extra Old) expression significantly exceeds the minimum age requirement, blending eaux-de-vie aged a minimum of 10 years in French oak barrels, predominantly local Gascogne oak.

Sourced from the coveted Bas-Armagnac region, often called the "Grand Cru" of the appellation due to its sandy, acidic soils, this spirit showcases the house's signature style: round, elegant, and fruit-driven with a dry finish. The long maturation in oak has imparted a beautiful, complex character, making it a spectacular sipper and an excellent value in premium French brandy.

Tasting Notes

  • Color: Warm, radiant honey-gold to deep amber.
  • Aroma: Richly scented with baked apples, almond paste, and vanilla custard. Initial sweetness of toffee and caramel gives way to complex notes of dried stone fruits (apricot, fig, prune), baking spices (clove, nutmeg), and a subtle, attractive hint of fine tobacco or cedar.
  • Palate: Full and generous, yet elegant. The entry is velvety smooth, delivering concentrated flavors of creamy caramel, sweet baking spices, and buttered croissant. Layers of dried apricot and tropical fruit are present, perfectly balanced by a restrained oak structure. The flavor profile is complex, warm, and inviting.
  • Finish: Long, silky, and refined. It finishes notably dry, leaving lingering notes of dark chocolate, licorice, and a pleasant warmth with a final, elegant dusting of spice.
  • Suggested Serve: Enjoy neat in a snifter or tulip glass to fully appreciate its depth and complexity. It is an exceptional digestif and pairs beautifully with dark chocolate or strong, aged cheeses.

What is the difference between Tequila & Mezcal?

Tequila is a type of mezcal, much like how scotch and bourbon are types of whiskey.

Tequila and mezcal are both types of agave-based spirits that are popular in Mexico, but there are some key differences between the two. Tequila is made exclusively from the blue agave plant, which is primarily grown in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, about 40 miles northwest of Guadalajara. Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from any type of agave plant, and is often made using traditional, labor-intensive methods.

One of the most noticeable differences between tequila and mezcal is their flavor. Tequila is typically smooth and subtle, with hints of fruit and spices, while mezcal has a more complex, smoky flavor that comes from the roasting of the agave hearts before they are fermented and distilled.

Another difference between the two spirits is their production process. Tequila is typically made using modern industrial methods, while mezcal is often produced using traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. This can give mezcal a more authentic, artisanal character.

In general, tequila is considered to be a more refined and sophisticated spirit, while mezcal is often viewed as a more rustic and traditional drink. Both are popular in Mexico and are enjoyed around the world, so the best way to decide which one you like is to try them both and see which one suits your tastes.
