 Chinaco Tequila Extra Añejo

A Landmark in Aged Tequila.

Chinaco Tequila holds a legendary place in the history of premium spirits, as it was the first high-end tequila introduced to the United States. This Extra Añejo is a crowning achievement, showcasing the distinctive terroir of Tamaulipas, the only state outside of Jalisco legally permitted to produce tequila. This magnificent expression is aged for an extended period, often five to six years, in carefully selected oak barrels, including ex-bourbon and Scotch white oak casks. This long, patient maturation allows the finest characteristics of the slow-roasted agave to meld with the depth and complexity of the wood, resulting in a spirit of profound elegance.

The Chinaco Extra Añejo is a single-cask, limited-edition offering that is unmanipulated by additives, coloring, or extracts. It is a tequila to be savored slowly, like a fine cognac or aged whiskey, offering a singular, rich, and remarkably smooth experience that honors over five decades of tradition.

Tasting Notes

  • Color: Deep, lustrous amber with brilliant copper highlights.
  • Aroma: Highly complex and inviting. Dominant notes of rich, dark caramel, toffee, and toasted oak give way to subtle hints of dried fruit (fig and cherry), vanilla bean, and a beautiful underlying note of baked apple and smoke.
  • Palate: Velvety and full-bodied, with incredible depth. The persistent sweetness of cooked agave and a savory, earthy minerality beautifully balance the flavors of dark chocolate, butterscotch, and spicy cedarwood.
  • Finish: Exceptionally long, warm, and luxurious. It concludes with a satisfying, lingering spice (cinnamon, clove), a touch of tobacco, and a lasting, refined sweetness.

What is the difference between Tequila & Mezcal?

Tequila is a type of mezcal, much like how scotch and bourbon are types of whiskey.

Tequila and mezcal are both types of agave-based spirits that are popular in Mexico, but there are some key differences between the two. Tequila is made exclusively from the blue agave plant, which is primarily grown in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, about 40 miles northwest of Guadalajara. Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from any type of agave plant, and is often made using traditional, labor-intensive methods.

One of the most noticeable differences between tequila and mezcal is their flavor. Tequila is typically smooth and subtle, with hints of fruit and spices, while mezcal has a more complex, smoky flavor that comes from the roasting of the agave hearts before they are fermented and distilled.

Another difference between the two spirits is their production process. Tequila is typically made using modern industrial methods, while mezcal is often produced using traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. This can give mezcal a more authentic, artisanal character.

In general, tequila is considered to be a more refined and sophisticated spirit, while mezcal is often viewed as a more rustic and traditional drink. Both are popular in Mexico and are enjoyed around the world, so the best way to decide which one you like is to try them both and see which one suits your tastes.
