Casa Loy Tahona “Piedra Y Agave” Tequila Blanco

A masterful return to the traditional, volcanic heart of tequila.

Casa Loy Tahona presents “Piedra Y Agave” (Stone and Agave), a super-premium Blanco Tequila crafted specifically for the connoisseur who values ancestral production methods. This expression is a profound celebration of patience, mineral-rich terroir, and the unadulterated flavor of the blue agave plant.

Bottled at a robust 43% alcohol content, “Piedra Y Agave” provides a firm structure in every sip, allowing the complex flavors generated by traditional production to take center stage.

The Traditional Method:

The depth of character in this Blanco is achieved through methods rarely seen in modern spirits production. The process begins with slow-roasting mature agave hearts in traditional stone ovens (hornos), converting starches into fermentable sugars while imparting deep caramelization.

The crucial next step is the milling: rather than using industrial shredders, Casa Loy utilizes a tahona, a multi-ton volcanic stone wheel drawn slowly over the cooked agave. This gentle crushing preserves the delicate fibers and maximizes the extraction of the plant's essential flavors, resulting in a cleaner juice that maintains profound notes of cooked agave and complex earthy undertones.

Signature Presentation:

This exceptional spirit is housed in a bottle that reflects its artisanal origins. It includes a beautiful, premium wooden stopper featuring a distinctive medallion, ensuring an airtight seal is maintained after the bottle has been opened, preserving its delicate volatility.

Tasting Notes

  • Aroma: (The Nose) Upon uncorking the bottle, an expressive and vibrant aromatic profile is immediately perceptible. The nose is greeted by bright citrus notes of lime zest and fresh white grapefruit, seamlessly integrated with fresh herbal qualities reminiscent of green pepper and thyme. A delicate undercurrent of fresh-cut floral notes adds sophistication, while the signature scent of sweet, slow-cooked agave provides a rich base.
  • Taste: (The Palate) The entry is assertive and structured, thanks to the 43% ABV. It reveals a complex palate that is both savory and sweet. Intense flavors of caramelized agave dominate the front, followed by a surprising wave of sweet, peppery spice. The tahona process shines through with a distinct, damp-earth minerality—the “Piedra Y Agave” itself—that provides an elegant, grounded mouthfeel.
  • Finish: The finish is long, warm, and exceptionally clean. The sweetness of the agave slowly fades, leaving a lingering trail of white pepper spice, fresh citrus oils, and that persistent, sophisticated volcanic earth minerality that invites you back for another sip.

Casa Loy Tahona “Piedra Y Agave” is tequila in its purest, most powerful, and most traditional form. It is best enjoyed neat or with a single, large piece of artisanal ice.

What is the difference between Tequila & Mezcal?

Tequila is a type of mezcal, much like how scotch and bourbon are types of whiskey.

Tequila and mezcal are both types of agave-based spirits that are popular in Mexico, but there are some key differences between the two. Tequila is made exclusively from the blue agave plant, which is primarily grown in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, about 40 miles northwest of Guadalajara. Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from any type of agave plant, and is often made using traditional, labor-intensive methods.

One of the most noticeable differences between tequila and mezcal is their flavor. Tequila is typically smooth and subtle, with hints of fruit and spices, while mezcal has a more complex, smoky flavor that comes from the roasting of the agave hearts before they are fermented and distilled.

Another difference between the two spirits is their production process. Tequila is typically made using modern industrial methods, while mezcal is often produced using traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. This can give mezcal a more authentic, artisanal character.

In general, tequila is considered to be a more refined and sophisticated spirit, while mezcal is often viewed as a more rustic and traditional drink. Both are popular in Mexico and are enjoyed around the world, so the best way to decide which one you like is to try them both and see which one suits your tastes.
