Calle 23 Criollo 'El Dos'

Eight years after the groundbreaking release of Criollo Blanco, master distiller Sophie Decobecq returns with Calle 23 Criollo 'El Dos'. Crafted to celebrate the birth of her second son, Eliès, this long-awaited limited edition showcases Decobecq’s background as a biochemist alongside her deep reverence for traditional Mexican distillation.

At the core of El Dos is the legendary Criollo agave, a natural, smaller variant of Blue Weber known for its exceptionally high concentration of fermentable sugars and intense aromatic complexity. Decobecq aged the spirit initially for nine months in seasoned oak barrels before transferring it to stainless steel tanks to arrest the oak influence while allowing the flavors to integrate. A portion of the batch was further aged to Extra Añejo maturity. The final blend consists predominantly of Añejo and Extra Añejo tequilas with a splash of Reposado. Per Mexican regulation, the entire bottling carries the label of its youngest component, Reposado, though the liquid inside possesses the depth and maturity of a far older spirit.

Profile & Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: Bright, pale straw gold with high clarity. Viscous in the glass, forming slow, persistent legs along the rim.
  • Nose: An inviting, highly layered bouquet. Immediate waves of concentrated cooked agave, tropical fruit intensity, and sweet baked citrus give way to subtle backnotes of vanilla bean, toasted almond, and soft baking spices. The oak signature remains delicate and perfectly integrated, never masking the pristine cooked agave core.
  • Palate: Rich, full-bodied, and beautifully balanced on the tongue. Vibrant flavors of roasted agave, ripe yellow orchard fruit, and herbal brightness hit first, followed by complex layers of warm oak, cacao, and light butterscotch derived from the long-aged component spirits.
  • Finish: Exceptionally long, clean, and warming. The finish leaves a lingering impression of white pepper spice, sweet agave nectar, and a touch of roasted citrus peel.

What is the difference between Tequila & Mezcal?

Tequila is a type of mezcal, much like how scotch and bourbon are types of whiskey.

Tequila and mezcal are both types of agave-based spirits that are popular in Mexico, but there are some key differences between the two. Tequila is made exclusively from the blue agave plant, which is primarily grown in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, about 40 miles northwest of Guadalajara. Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from any type of agave plant, and is often made using traditional, labor-intensive methods.

One of the most noticeable differences between tequila and mezcal is their flavor. Tequila is typically smooth and subtle, with hints of fruit and spices, while mezcal has a more complex, smoky flavor that comes from the roasting of the agave hearts before they are fermented and distilled.

Another difference between the two spirits is their production process. Tequila is typically made using modern industrial methods, while mezcal is often produced using traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. This can give mezcal a more authentic, artisanal character.

In general, tequila is considered to be a more refined and sophisticated spirit, while mezcal is often viewed as a more rustic and traditional drink. Both are popular in Mexico and are enjoyed around the world, so the best way to decide which one you like is to try them both and see which one suits your tastes.
