Brooklyn Kura "Lake Effect" Nigori Sake (375ml)
Crafted in New York. Inspired by Tradition.
Brooklyn Kura, New York’s first sake brewery, continues to bridge the gap between Japanese heritage and American innovation. Lake Effect is their seasonal Nigori (cloudy) sake, named after the winter weather patterns of the Great Lakes. This is not your typical "sweet and creamy" grocery store Nigori; it is a sophisticated, "active" sake that retains the elegant texture of rice solids while maintaining a crisp, dry finish.
Brewed in Industry City, Brooklyn, using American-grown Yamada Nishiki rice (milled to 60%) and New York City’s exceptionally soft water, this sake is a testament to what "New American Sake" can achieve.
The Nigori Style: "The Cloud"
Unlike clear sakes, Nigori is coarsely filtered, allowing the kasu (fine rice particles) to remain in the bottle. This creates a beautiful, snow-like appearance and a rich, velvety mouthfeel. Before serving, gently turn the bottle to incorporate the sediment for the full "Lake Effect" experience.
Tasting Notes: Bright, Textural, and Dry
- Aroma: A lively and aromatic nose featuring notes of fresh lily, honeydew melon, and a delicate hint of tropical coconut water.
- Palate: The texture is silky and light, avoiding the heavy syrupy quality found in many commercial Nigoris. A subtle, creamy lactic tang, reminiscent of Greek yogurt or fresh cream, balances flavors of bright green apple and white peach.
- Finish: Surprisingly clean and dry. The finish lingers with a soft rice sweetness and a touch of citrus zest, making it incredibly refreshing.
Perfect Pairings
Because Lake Effect leans toward the drier side of the Nigori spectrum, it is exceptionally food-friendly.
- Spicy Cuisine: The creamy texture acts as a perfect foil for spicy Thai curries or Szechuan peppercorns.
- Savory Comforts: Pairs beautifully with fried chicken, pork tonkatsu, or rich cheese boards.
- The "Brooklyn" Match: Try it with a classic New York pizza; the acidity and creaminess cut through the fats and tomato sauce perfectly.

What is the difference between Tequila & Mezcal?
Tequila is a type of mezcal, much like how scotch and bourbon are types of whiskey.
Tequila and mezcal are both types of agave-based spirits that are popular in Mexico, but there are some key differences between the two. Tequila is made exclusively from the blue agave plant, which is primarily grown in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, about 40 miles northwest of Guadalajara. Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from any type of agave plant, and is often made using traditional, labor-intensive methods.
One of the most noticeable differences between tequila and mezcal is their flavor. Tequila is typically smooth and subtle, with hints of fruit and spices, while mezcal has a more complex, smoky flavor that comes from the roasting of the agave hearts before they are fermented and distilled.
Another difference between the two spirits is their production process. Tequila is typically made using modern industrial methods, while mezcal is often produced using traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. This can give mezcal a more authentic, artisanal character.
In general, tequila is considered to be a more refined and sophisticated spirit, while mezcal is often viewed as a more rustic and traditional drink. Both are popular in Mexico and are enjoyed around the world, so the best way to decide which one you like is to try them both and see which one suits your tastes.
