Bodega Ugabe: Unfiltered Txakoli 2024 (Bizkaiko Txakolina)
From the steep, emerald slopes of Mount Gorbea in the Arratia Valley, Bodega Ugabe delivers a rare look at Basque winemaking in its most natural state. While most Txakoli is filtered to a crystal-clear shimmer, Ugaitz Iturbe, whose family has farmed this land for six generations, chooses to bottle this cuvée unfiltered.
This 2024 vintage is a vibrant "cloudy" white wine that drinks with the texture of a light skin-contact orange wine. It is estate-grown, organic, and aged for six months on its lees to provide a richness that balances the high-energy acidity for which the region is famous.
Tasting Notes
- Appearance: Pours a hazy, pale straw color with a youthful, light effervescence that quickly settles into the glass.
- Nose: A burst of high-toned fruit. Dominant aromas of tart green apple and nectarine are layered with zesty lemon peel and a distinct "seaspray" salinity.
- Palate: Bracingly fresh and bone-dry. The unfiltered nature provides a creamy, yeasty weight that rounds out the sharp edges of the Hondarrabi Zuri grapes. You will find flavors of unripe peach, lime pith, and a flinty minerality.
- Finish: Long, snappy, and mouth-watering. It finishes with a saline "snap" and a touch of savory almond.
The Perfect Pour
This wine is the ultimate partner for the "tapas" or "pintxos" lifestyle. Its natural acidity and saline core make it a perfect match for fresh oysters, boquerones (anchovies), or grilled sardines.
Service Note:
Because this is an unfiltered wine, you may see some natural sediment at the bottom of the bottle. Give it a gentle swirl before opening to integrate the flavors, and serve well-chilled.

What is the difference between Tequila & Mezcal?
Tequila is a type of mezcal, much like how scotch and bourbon are types of whiskey.
Tequila and mezcal are both types of agave-based spirits that are popular in Mexico, but there are some key differences between the two. Tequila is made exclusively from the blue agave plant, which is primarily grown in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, about 40 miles northwest of Guadalajara. Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from any type of agave plant, and is often made using traditional, labor-intensive methods.
One of the most noticeable differences between tequila and mezcal is their flavor. Tequila is typically smooth and subtle, with hints of fruit and spices, while mezcal has a more complex, smoky flavor that comes from the roasting of the agave hearts before they are fermented and distilled.
Another difference between the two spirits is their production process. Tequila is typically made using modern industrial methods, while mezcal is often produced using traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. This can give mezcal a more authentic, artisanal character.
In general, tequila is considered to be a more refined and sophisticated spirit, while mezcal is often viewed as a more rustic and traditional drink. Both are popular in Mexico and are enjoyed around the world, so the best way to decide which one you like is to try them both and see which one suits your tastes.
