Atanasio Orígenes Reposado: The Soul of the Lowlands

Rich, earthy, and masterfully balanced.

While many premium tequilas hail from the Highlands, Atanasio Origenes Reposado is a proud champion of the Tequila Valley (Lowlands). Grown in the dark, mineral-rich volcanic soil of El Arenal, Jalisco, this Reposado is a testament to patience and terroir. It honors the "Old School" methods of tequila production, delivering a profile that is more savory, spicy, and grounded than its fruitier Highland cousins.

Aged for at least several months in reclaimed oak, this spirit doesn't hide the agave behind wood; it uses the barrel to frame the agave's natural, rugged beauty.

Tasting Notes

  • The Look: A warm, pale honey hue with brilliant clarity and a medium-heavy body.
  • The Nose: A robust invitation of roasted agave and damp earth. As it breathes, you’ll discover delicate layers of vanilla bean, cinnamon stick, and a distinctive "Lowland" scent of black pepper and dried herbs.
  • The Palate: Round and oily on the tongue. The initial sweetness of butterscotch and cooked agave is quickly met by a complex, savory mid-palate of salted caramel, roasted nuts, and a touch of tobacco leaf.
  • The Finish: Long, warming, and decidedly spicy. It leaves a lingering trail of oak tannins and clove, with a clean agave sweetness that persists.

Why "Origenes"?

The Origenes line from Atanasio is a tribute to the craft's roots. By using a traditional brick oven to roast rather than modern diffusers, they preserve the complex fibers and sugars that give this tequila its signature "baked yam" richness. It’s a bridge between the wild, raw spirit of the earth and the refined elegance of a world-class sipper.

How to Enjoy

  • Neat: This is a connoisseur’s reposado. Sip it slowly from a Riedel tequila glass to appreciate the volcanic minerality.
  • The Elevated Old Fashioned: Replace bourbon with Atanasio Reposado, add agave nectar and orange bitters for a sophisticated, agave-forward twist.
  • With Food: Its earthy backbone pairs beautifully with grilled meats, mole poblano, or even a rich, creamy flan.

What is the difference between Tequila & Mezcal?

Tequila is a type of mezcal, much like how scotch and bourbon are types of whiskey.

Tequila and mezcal are both types of agave-based spirits that are popular in Mexico, but there are some key differences between the two. Tequila is made exclusively from the blue agave plant, which is primarily grown in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, about 40 miles northwest of Guadalajara. Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from any type of agave plant, and is often made using traditional, labor-intensive methods.

One of the most noticeable differences between tequila and mezcal is their flavor. Tequila is typically smooth and subtle, with hints of fruit and spices, while mezcal has a more complex, smoky flavor that comes from the roasting of the agave hearts before they are fermented and distilled.

Another difference between the two spirits is their production process. Tequila is typically made using modern industrial methods, while mezcal is often produced using traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. This can give mezcal a more authentic, artisanal character.

In general, tequila is considered to be a more refined and sophisticated spirit, while mezcal is often viewed as a more rustic and traditional drink. Both are popular in Mexico and are enjoyed around the world, so the best way to decide which one you like is to try them both and see which one suits your tastes.
