Atanasio Orígenes Espíritu Fuerte ‘Fibras & Fuego’ Edition
Atanasio Origenes Espiritu Fuerte ‘Fibras & Fuego’ is a masterclass in experimental distillation and the first US-exclusive limited release from Atanasio. Produced by the Familia Landeros (NOM 1599) in El Medineño, Jalisco, this Blanco tequila is a testament to the curiosity of Maestro Tequilero René Carranza.
The "Fibers & Fire" edition gets its name from a unique blending process: 95% of the tequila is René’s esteemed high-proof Orígenes, while the remaining 5% is a true micro-batch. This small portion is fermented with fibers in a tiny 8-liter stainless pot and distilled twice in that same miniature vessel. This dense, fiber-heavy concentrate is then blended back into the main batch, resulting in a tequila that is both familiar to Atanasio fans and remarkably distinct.
Tasting Notes
- Aroma: Lovely and loud, the aromatics practically climb out of the glass. It leads with bold notes of roasted apple and sweet potato, layered with pomegranate, toasted cinnamon, and bright orange and lime zests. Deeper hints of wet stone, bamboo, and pineapple cake provide a complex, inviting bouquet.
- Palate: The palate delivers on every aromatic promise with a silky, coating texture. Flavors of cooked parsnip, honeycomb, and lemon curd take center stage, accented by white pepper and a sophisticated touch of clove and fennel seed.
- Finish: A subtle, elegant heat makes a late appearance, accompanied by an earthy touch of damp tree bark. The finish is long and evolving, showcasing the depth provided by the micro-batch inclusion.

What is the difference between Tequila & Mezcal?
Tequila is a type of mezcal, much like how scotch and bourbon are types of whiskey.
Tequila and mezcal are both types of agave-based spirits that are popular in Mexico, but there are some key differences between the two. Tequila is made exclusively from the blue agave plant, which is primarily grown in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, about 40 miles northwest of Guadalajara. Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from any type of agave plant, and is often made using traditional, labor-intensive methods.
One of the most noticeable differences between tequila and mezcal is their flavor. Tequila is typically smooth and subtle, with hints of fruit and spices, while mezcal has a more complex, smoky flavor that comes from the roasting of the agave hearts before they are fermented and distilled.
Another difference between the two spirits is their production process. Tequila is typically made using modern industrial methods, while mezcal is often produced using traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. This can give mezcal a more authentic, artisanal character.
In general, tequila is considered to be a more refined and sophisticated spirit, while mezcal is often viewed as a more rustic and traditional drink. Both are popular in Mexico and are enjoyed around the world, so the best way to decide which one you like is to try them both and see which one suits your tastes.
