Atanasio Cask Strength Single Barrel Reposado: The Unfiltered Masterpiece
Powerful, rare, and beautifully intense.
While the standard Reposado is about balance, the Atanasio Cask Strength Single Barrel is about raw, concentrated character. This is Tequila in its most potent and individual form. Each bottle comes from a solitary, hand-selected American white oak barrel and is bottled without dilution, capturing the spirit exactly as it existed inside the wood.
With an ABV typically ranging from 51% to 53% (by barrel), this expression is for the enthusiast who wants to experience the "High Definition" version of Lowland Tequila. It is additive-free, artisanal, and produced in extremely limited quantities.
Tasting Notes
- The Look: Rich, deep copper with brilliant golden reflections. Because it is unfiltered and high-proof, it possesses an incredible viscosity that creates thick, slow-moving "tears" on the glass.
- The Nose: A high-octane aromatic experience. Initial notes of intense cooked agave and toasted oak are followed by heavy baking spices—cinnamon, clove, and nutmeg. You’ll find a deep, savory undercurrent of leather and roasted walnuts.
- The Palate: A massive, mouth-coating arrival. The heat is present but remarkably well integrated, carrying flavors of dark salted caramel, butterscotch, and espresso beans. The volcanic minerality of the El Arenal soil shines through as a peppery, earthy mid-palate.
- The Finish: Explosive and exceptionally long. It leaves a lingering warmth of charred oak, anise, and a sweet-smoky agave nectar that lingers for minutes.
Why It’s a Collector’s Choice
This is Atanasio with the volume turned all the way up. Because it’s a single barrel, no two releases are identical. One barrel might lean into the sweet vanilla of the oak, while another showcases the spicy, herbal 'green' notes of the agave."
Serving Recommendations
Neat (With Water): Start neat to feel the power, then add a few drops of room-temperature water. This "opens up" the spirit, releasing hidden floral and citrus notes that are otherwise tucked behind the high alcohol.
The Glass: Use a wide-bottomed glass or a brandy snifter to allow the alcohol vapors to dissipate and the complex aromatics to take center stage.
The Pairing:
Best enjoyed alongside dark chocolate (70%+ cocoa) or a high-quality cigar, both of which complement the rich tannins of the single barrel aging.

What is the difference between Tequila & Mezcal?
Tequila is a type of mezcal, much like how scotch and bourbon are types of whiskey.
Tequila and mezcal are both types of agave-based spirits that are popular in Mexico, but there are some key differences between the two. Tequila is made exclusively from the blue agave plant, which is primarily grown in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, about 40 miles northwest of Guadalajara. Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from any type of agave plant, and is often made using traditional, labor-intensive methods.
One of the most noticeable differences between tequila and mezcal is their flavor. Tequila is typically smooth and subtle, with hints of fruit and spices, while mezcal has a more complex, smoky flavor that comes from the roasting of the agave hearts before they are fermented and distilled.
Another difference between the two spirits is their production process. Tequila is typically made using modern industrial methods, while mezcal is often produced using traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. This can give mezcal a more authentic, artisanal character.
In general, tequila is considered to be a more refined and sophisticated spirit, while mezcal is often viewed as a more rustic and traditional drink. Both are popular in Mexico and are enjoyed around the world, so the best way to decide which one you like is to try them both and see which one suits your tastes.
