Arette Artesanal Suave "FUERTE" 101 Blanco

Tequila Fuerte translates to "strong," and this expression from Tequila Arette lives up to its name. Bottled at a robust 101 proof (50.5% ABV), this high-proof Blanco is a masterclass in balance, specifically designed for those who want the pure, unadulterated essence of agave without the heat overpowering the flavor.

Crafted at the historic El Llano distillery (NOM 1109) in the heart of Tequila town, this "Artesanal" line utilizes traditional masonry ovens and a unique fermentation process that includes a small amount of agave fibers to enhance complexity.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: Crystal clear with exceptional viscosity. Thick, slow-moving "tears" on the glass hint at its rich mouthfeel and high alcohol content.
  • Aroma: An immediate explosion of roasted agave. It is remarkably floral and vegetal, featuring notes of: Freshly cut grass and green bell pepper. Bright citrus zest (lemon and grapefruit). A distinct "earthy" mineral quality, reminiscent of rain on dry stones.
  • Palate: Despite the high proof, the entry is surprisingly soft—a testament to the "Suave" branding. The Agave: Sweet, cooked agave dominates the mid-palate.
  • The Spice: A bold kick of black pepper and cinnamon.
  • The Texture: Oily and coating, providing a buttery weight that carries the flavors across the tongue.
  • Finish: Long, warm, and drying. The herbal notes fade into a lingering sweetness of anise and mint, leaving a pleasant, tingling spice that invites another sip.

Why It Stands Out

Unlike many high-proof tequilas that can feel "hot" or medicinal, Arette Fuerte amplifies the delicate flavors of the agave. It is a favorite among bartenders for its ability to "cut through" in complex cocktails like a Paloma or Tommy’s Margarita. Still, it is refined enough to be enjoyed neat by enthusiasts.

Pro Tip:

Try adding three drops of room-temperature water to your glass. This "opens up" the spirit, taming the alcohol vapors and revealing hidden floral notes of orange blossom.

What is the difference between Tequila & Mezcal?

Tequila is a type of mezcal, much like how scotch and bourbon are types of whiskey.

Tequila and mezcal are both types of agave-based spirits that are popular in Mexico, but there are some key differences between the two. Tequila is made exclusively from the blue agave plant, which is primarily grown in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, about 40 miles northwest of Guadalajara. Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from any type of agave plant, and is often made using traditional, labor-intensive methods.

One of the most noticeable differences between tequila and mezcal is their flavor. Tequila is typically smooth and subtle, with hints of fruit and spices, while mezcal has a more complex, smoky flavor that comes from the roasting of the agave hearts before they are fermented and distilled.

Another difference between the two spirits is their production process. Tequila is typically made using modern industrial methods, while mezcal is often produced using traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. This can give mezcal a more authentic, artisanal character.

In general, tequila is considered to be a more refined and sophisticated spirit, while mezcal is often viewed as a more rustic and traditional drink. Both are popular in Mexico and are enjoyed around the world, so the best way to decide which one you like is to try them both and see which one suits your tastes.
