Ancho Reyes Original: The Soul of Puebla in a Bottle
Experience the authentic spirit of Mexico with Ancho Reyes Original Chile Liqueur. Presented in a classic 750 mL glass bottle that reflects its 1920s heritage, this award-winning liqueur is a masterclass in patient craftsmanship. Every drop is a tribute to the "Santiaguero" chiles, poblano chiles that are left to ripen on the vine until they turn a deep red, then sun-dried to become the legendary Ancho.
The Art of the Six-Month Maceration
While many spirits are rushed to market, Ancho Reyes is defined by time. Our sun-dried chiles are hand-selected and macerated in neutral cane spirit for a full six months. This extended period allows the spirit to pull every nuance of flavor from the fruit, not just the heat, but the deep, raisin-like sweetness and smoky earthiness that can only be achieved through slow extraction. Following maceration, our master blender meticulously balances the liquid to ensure a consistent, world-class profile in every batch.
Official Tasting Notes
- Appearance: A rich, bright copper color with golden reflections and a heavy, velvety body.
- Aroma: An inviting bouquet of dried chiles, toasted almonds, and cocoa. Subtle notes of cinnamon and tamarind provide a warm, autumnal nose.
- Palate: A complex layering of flavors. It begins with a robust, honeyed sweetness reminiscent of piloncillo (raw cane sugar) and dried plums. This is quickly joined by a savory smokiness and a hint of black pepper.
- Finish: A pleasant, smoldering heat that lingers comfortably on the back of the throat. The finish is long and tapering, leaving behind traces of dark chocolate and roasted nuts.
Serving Suggestions
The 750 mL bottle is a staple for any home bar or professional well, offering enough versatility for any occasion:
- The Signature Serve: Stir 2 parts Ancho Reyes with 1 part fresh lime juice and a touch of agave nectar for a spicy twist on the classic Gimlet.
- The Modifier: Add 15 mL to a traditional Margarita or Paloma to introduce a sophisticated, smoky heat that cuts through the citrus.
- The Digestif: Sip it neat or over a single large ice cube after a meal to appreciate the full evolution of the chile from sweet to spicy.

What is the difference between Tequila & Mezcal?
Tequila is a type of mezcal, much like how scotch and bourbon are types of whiskey.
Tequila and mezcal are both types of agave-based spirits that are popular in Mexico, but there are some key differences between the two. Tequila is made exclusively from the blue agave plant, which is primarily grown in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, about 40 miles northwest of Guadalajara. Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from any type of agave plant, and is often made using traditional, labor-intensive methods.
One of the most noticeable differences between tequila and mezcal is their flavor. Tequila is typically smooth and subtle, with hints of fruit and spices, while mezcal has a more complex, smoky flavor that comes from the roasting of the agave hearts before they are fermented and distilled.
Another difference between the two spirits is their production process. Tequila is typically made using modern industrial methods, while mezcal is often produced using traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. This can give mezcal a more authentic, artisanal character.
In general, tequila is considered to be a more refined and sophisticated spirit, while mezcal is often viewed as a more rustic and traditional drink. Both are popular in Mexico and are enjoyed around the world, so the best way to decide which one you like is to try them both and see which one suits your tastes.
