Alambique Serrano Vida Nativa Blend #4 Mariposa 88
Alambique Serrano Vida Nativa Blend #4 Mariposa 88 is a cask-strength, small-batch release of just 571 bottles, distilled entirely from fresh Java sugarcane juice harvested in the high cloud forests of Oaxaca. Crafted in Santa Maria Tlalixtac by the Krassel family, this expression relies on ambient wild-yeast fermentation in open pine vats, establishing a deeply agrarian and ester-rich foundation.
Blend #4 brings together a masterclass in dual distillation and four-cask maturation, uniting spirits distilled in traditional copper alembic pot stills and the proprietary continuous Krassel column still. One parcel matures for three years in new French oak before finishing for eleven months in ex-tequila casks; the second parcel rests for 38 months in ex-bourbon wood, followed by a ten-month finish in ex-Merlot barrels. Bottled unadulterated at cask strength without added sugar, artificial colorants, or chill filtration, Mariposa 88 captures pure cane terroir shaped by complex secondary wood grains.

Tasting Notes
- Appearance: Deep coppery auburn with brilliant garnet highlights and slow, heavy tears clinging to the glass.
- Aroma: Intensely aromatic and layered. Initial notes of rich brioche and pan de muerto mingle with bright orange compote and tart red currant. As it opens, floral top notes of wild lavender surface alongside warm baking spices and the distinctive earthy cocoa butter richness of native rosita de cacao.
- Palate: Dense, oily, and commandingly full-bodied on the tongue at 56.1% ABV. Concentrated citrus marmalade, sweet buttered pastry, and dark stone fruit coat the palate before transitioning into vibrant herbal florality, crushed peppercorn, and gentle oak tannins from the wine and tequila cask finishes.
- Finish: Long, structured, and complex. Lingering nuances of dried berries, toasted oak, and lingering spice taper off into a clean, mineral-driven sugarcane sweetness with a touch of dry cacao.
Serving & Preparation Recommendations
- With Water: Adding 3 to 4 drops of room-temperature water unlocks the proof, relaxing the dense texture to release delicate aromatic lavender, warm baking spices, and a richer expression of the native rosita de cacao.
Signature Cocktail: Canada Martinez
A stirred cocktail designed to accentuate the spirit's tequila and red wine cask accents:
- 1.5 oz Alambique Serrano Vida Nativa Blend #4 Mariposa 88
- 1.5 oz Sweet Vermouth
- 1 barspoon Maraschino Liqueur
- 2 dashes Orange Bitters
Combine all ingredients in a mixing glass with cracked ice. Stir until well-chilled and strain into a chilled coupe glass. Express a wide swath of fresh orange peel over the top and drop it in as a garnish to heighten the citrus, tequila, and red wine wood accents.

What is the difference between Tequila & Mezcal?
Tequila is a type of mezcal, much like how scotch and bourbon are types of whiskey.
Tequila and mezcal are both types of agave-based spirits that are popular in Mexico, but there are some key differences between the two. Tequila is made exclusively from the blue agave plant, which is primarily grown in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, about 40 miles northwest of Guadalajara. Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from any type of agave plant, and is often made using traditional, labor-intensive methods.
One of the most noticeable differences between tequila and mezcal is their flavor. Tequila is typically smooth and subtle, with hints of fruit and spices, while mezcal has a more complex, smoky flavor that comes from the roasting of the agave hearts before they are fermented and distilled.
Another difference between the two spirits is their production process. Tequila is typically made using modern industrial methods, while mezcal is often produced using traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. This can give mezcal a more authentic, artisanal character.
In general, tequila is considered to be a more refined and sophisticated spirit, while mezcal is often viewed as a more rustic and traditional drink. Both are popular in Mexico and are enjoyed around the world, so the best way to decide which one you like is to try them both and see which one suits your tastes.
