Alain Graillot / Thalvin "Syrocco" Syrah 2023
Born from a chance encounter during a bicycle tour of Morocco, Syrocco is a unique collaboration between the legendary Northern Rhône producer Alain Graillot and Domaine des Ouled Thaleb (Thalvin). This wine proves that the Atlantic-influenced hills of the Zenata region are a hidden paradise for Syrah. By combining Graillot’s expertise in Crozes-Hermitage with Morocco’s ancient vine heritage, they have created a wine that is both exotic and classically structured.
Tasting Notes
- Appearance: A deep, saturated ruby with vibrant purple reflections at the rim, indicating its youthful energy and the intensity of the Moroccan sun.
- Nose: The bouquet is an intriguing mix of Old World savory notes and ripe, sun-drenched fruit. Aromas of muddled blackberries and dark plums are layered with cracked black pepper, wild Mediterranean herbs (garrigue), and a distinctive hint of sandalwood and incense.
- Palate: On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with a remarkably supple texture. The fruit is forward and juicy, think dark cherry and cassis, but it is grounded by a refreshing acidity brought by the cool Atlantic breezes. The tannins are finely integrated, leading to a finish that is clean, savory, and surprisingly elegant for a wine from North Africa.
Suggested Pairings
This Syrah was practically made for the bold, aromatic spices of its homeland, but its balance makes it a versatile partner for many savory dishes:
- Classic Pairing: Lamb tagine with prunes and almonds or a spicy beef couscous. From the Grill: Harissa-rubbed chicken, merguez sausages, or charred portobello mushrooms.
- Hard Cheeses: Aged Manchego or a sharp, nutty Cheddar.
This 2023 vintage continues the Graillot tradition of minimal intervention, using organic farming and concrete vat fermentation to ensure the terroir of the Zenata plateau speaks clearly in every glass.

What is the difference between Tequila & Mezcal?
Tequila is a type of mezcal, much like how scotch and bourbon are types of whiskey.
Tequila and mezcal are both types of agave-based spirits that are popular in Mexico, but there are some key differences between the two. Tequila is made exclusively from the blue agave plant, which is primarily grown in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, about 40 miles northwest of Guadalajara. Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from any type of agave plant, and is often made using traditional, labor-intensive methods.
One of the most noticeable differences between tequila and mezcal is their flavor. Tequila is typically smooth and subtle, with hints of fruit and spices, while mezcal has a more complex, smoky flavor that comes from the roasting of the agave hearts before they are fermented and distilled.
Another difference between the two spirits is their production process. Tequila is typically made using modern industrial methods, while mezcal is often produced using traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. This can give mezcal a more authentic, artisanal character.
In general, tequila is considered to be a more refined and sophisticated spirit, while mezcal is often viewed as a more rustic and traditional drink. Both are popular in Mexico and are enjoyed around the world, so the best way to decide which one you like is to try them both and see which one suits your tastes.
