2024 Fortaleza Winter Blend Reposado Tequila
The 2024 Fortaleza Winter Blend Reposado Tequila is the highly anticipated and meticulously crafted annual limited release from Tequila Los Abuelos (NOM 1493), under the masterful guidance of fifth-generation distiller Guillermo Erickson Sauza. Each Winter Blend is a unique exploration of the subtle yet profound influence of wood aging on Fortaleza's world-renowned, traditionally made tequila.
For the 2024 expression, Guillermo has once again innovated, selecting used, lightly toasted American oak barrels that previously held Scotch whisky for its aging. This deliberate choice imparts a sophisticated layer of complexity, marrying the pristine character of the Fortaleza Blanco with the nuanced essence of its former contents and the delicate toast of the wood. The foundational tequila adheres to Fortaleza's revered methods: slow-cooked agaves in a traditional stone oven, tahona crushed, naturally fermented in open-air wood tanks, and double-distilled in small copper pot stills.
Tasting Notes:
- Nose: An inviting and intricately layered aroma. The sweet, cooked agave characteristic of Fortaleza is beautifully present, immediately complemented by soft notes of vanilla, honey, and a delicate malty sweetness, hinting at its Scotch whisky heritage. There are also subtle hints of dried fruit (apricot, fig), a hint of almond, and a gentle wood spice, such as cinnamon or nutmeg. The signature Fortaleza minerality provides a clean, earthy counterbalance to the richer notes.
- Palate: The entry is smooth and velvety, with a medium body that coats the palate elegantly. A delightful warmth from the barrel soon joins the initial sweetness of the agave. Flavors of creamy vanilla, light caramel, and a distinctive hint of toasted grain or shortbread emerge, subtly reflecting its Scotch past without overpowering the tequila's core. Delicate fruit notes, reminiscent of baked apples or pears, mingle with a whisper of white pepper and a gentle oak spice. The unique Fortaleza minerality and a soft brininess weave through, adding complexity and preventing it from being overly sweet.
- Finish: The finish is long, remarkably smooth, and gracefully nuanced. The sweet agave notes persist, accompanied by a lingering warmth and a hint of vanilla, along with a delicate, pleasant wood spice. The subtle malty character from the former Scotch barrel leaves a memorable, sophisticated impression that gently fades, inviting quiet contemplation of its unique journey. This is a refined and contemplative tequila that truly showcases the art of barrel selection.
The 2024 Winter Blend Reposado offers an exceptional and harmonious fusion of classic agave sweetness with intriguing notes from its unique barrel lineage, resulting in a tequila of remarkable depth, elegance, and a truly distinctive profile.

What is the difference between Tequila & Mezcal?
Tequila is a type of mezcal, much like how scotch and bourbon are types of whiskey.
Tequila and mezcal are both types of agave-based spirits that are popular in Mexico, but there are some key differences between the two. Tequila is made exclusively from the blue agave plant, which is primarily grown in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, about 40 miles northwest of Guadalajara. Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from any type of agave plant, and is often made using traditional, labor-intensive methods.
One of the most noticeable differences between tequila and mezcal is their flavor. Tequila is typically smooth and subtle, with hints of fruit and spices, while mezcal has a more complex, smoky flavor that comes from the roasting of the agave hearts before they are fermented and distilled.
Another difference between the two spirits is their production process. Tequila is typically made using modern industrial methods, while mezcal is often produced using traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. This can give mezcal a more authentic, artisanal character.
In general, tequila is considered to be a more refined and sophisticated spirit, while mezcal is often viewed as a more rustic and traditional drink. Both are popular in Mexico and are enjoyed around the world, so the best way to decide which one you like is to try them both and see which one suits your tastes.
