2022 Fortaleza Winter Blend Reposado Tequila
The 2022 Fortaleza Winter Blend Reposado Tequila is another highly anticipated and limited annual release from the legendary Tequila Los Abuelos distillery (NOM 1493), expertly crafted by the visionary fifth-generation Master Distiller, Guillermo Erickson Sauza. Each Winter Blend is a unique exploration of barrel aging, designed to highlight the profound interaction between Fortaleza's traditionally made tequila and various wood treatments.
For the 2022 expression, Guillermo once again pushed the boundaries, opting for heavily charred American oak barrels for aging. This specific choice of wood, distinct from previous years, imparts a deeper, more robust, and richly caramelized character to the pristine Fortaleza Blanco. As always, the process begins with slow-cooking agaves in a traditional stone oven, crushing them with a tahona, natural fermentation in open-air wood tanks, and double distillation in small copper pot stills.
Tasting Notes:
- Nose: A captivating and assertive aroma, immediately revealing the influence of the heavily charred oak. Dominant notes of rich, dark caramel, roasted nuts (such as almond and hazelnut), and bittersweet chocolate intertwine with the sweet, cooked agave. Hints of dried fruit (prune, raisin), toasted coconut, and a touch of roasted coffee bean emerge. The characteristic Fortaleza minerality provides a grounding counterpoint to the richer, deeper aromas.
- Palate: The palate is robust and full-bodied, with a velvety, coating texture. A powerful wave of dark caramel and burnt sugar washes over the tongue, followed by intense notes of dark chocolate, roasted coffee, and a distinct smokiness or char. The underlying cooked agave remains, providing a sweet and earthy core. Spicier notes of black pepper, baking spices (including clove and allspice), and a hint of tobacco leaf add complexity. Despite the intensity of the barrel, the signature Fortaleza minerality and a touch of salinity still shine through, balancing the richness beautifully.
- Finish: The finish is exceptionally long, warm, and deeply satisfying, with a remarkable persistence of flavor. The dark caramel, roasted notes, and a subtle lingering smokiness gracefully fade, leaving behind a profound essence of rich cooked agave and a pleasant, warming spice. It's a contemplative and powerful finish, showcasing the masterful integration of a deeply charred barrel with Fortaleza's exceptional spirit. This tequila is designed for slow, deliberate enjoyment.
The 2022 Winter Blend Reposado delivers an extraordinary depth of flavor, marrying the vibrant essence of agave with the intense, complex notes derived from its unique, heavily charred barrel aging, resulting in a remarkably sophisticated and powerful sipping experience.

What is the difference between Tequila & Mezcal?
Tequila is a type of mezcal, much like how scotch and bourbon are types of whiskey.
Tequila and mezcal are both types of agave-based spirits that are popular in Mexico, but there are some key differences between the two. Tequila is made exclusively from the blue agave plant, which is primarily grown in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, about 40 miles northwest of Guadalajara. Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from any type of agave plant, and is often made using traditional, labor-intensive methods.
One of the most noticeable differences between tequila and mezcal is their flavor. Tequila is typically smooth and subtle, with hints of fruit and spices, while mezcal has a more complex, smoky flavor that comes from the roasting of the agave hearts before they are fermented and distilled.
Another difference between the two spirits is their production process. Tequila is typically made using modern industrial methods, while mezcal is often produced using traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. This can give mezcal a more authentic, artisanal character.
In general, tequila is considered to be a more refined and sophisticated spirit, while mezcal is often viewed as a more rustic and traditional drink. Both are popular in Mexico and are enjoyed around the world, so the best way to decide which one you like is to try them both and see which one suits your tastes.
