2021 Fortaleza Winter Blend Reposado Tequila
The 2021 Fortaleza Winter Blend Reposado Tequila is a highly anticipated and exceptionally unique annual release from the revered Tequila Los Abuelos distillery (NOM 1493), crafted by the fifth-generation maestro, Guillermo Erickson Sauza. Each Winter Blend is a distinct experiment in aging, designed to showcase the incredible versatility and depth of Fortaleza's traditionally made tequila.
For the 2021 release, Guillermo continued his innovative approach, specifically utilizing new, lightly charred American oak barrels for aging. This particular choice of wood, combined with the precise aging period, imparts a singular character to the renowned Fortaleza Blanco. The agaves, as always, are slow-cooked in a traditional stone oven, crushed by a tahona, naturally fermented in open-air wood tanks, and double-distilled in small copper pot stills.
Tasting Notes:
- Nose: A captivating aroma that balances the classic Fortaleza agave sweetness with a refined woody influence. You'll immediately notice notes of sweet, cooked agave, beautifully complemented by vanilla, caramel, and a delicate toasted marshmallow sweetness from the new oak. There are whispers of baking spices (cinnamon, nutmeg), a hint of dried fruit, and a pleasant, subtle earthiness. The characteristic Fortaleza minerality remains, providing a beautiful backbone.
- Palate: The palate is wonderfully soft and smooth, with a luscious, medium to full body. The sweetness of the cooked agave integrates seamlessly with the barrel notes, offering flavors of rich vanilla bean, warm caramel, and a touch of light brown sugar. The new oak contributes a gentle toasted character, reminiscent of shortbread or a subtle graham cracker. Bright notes of orange zest and a soft peppery spice emerge mid-palate, preventing it from being overly sweet. The signature Fortaleza minerality and a hint of olive brine provide depth and complexity.
- Finish: The finish is long, elegant, and exceptionally smooth, with a lingering warmth. The vanilla and caramel notes gently fade, leaving behind the pure essence of cooked agave, a delicate spice, and a whisper of toasted oak. It's clean, comforting, and remarkably well-balanced, inviting quiet contemplation and another delightful sip. The absence of harshness is a testament to its expert craftsmanship.
The 2021 Winter Blend Reposado offers a captivating balance between the vibrant freshness of the Fortaleza Blanco and the nuanced complexity imparted by its unique barrel aging, creating an elegant and remarkably smooth sipping experience that stands apart from the standard Fortaleza Reposado.

What is the difference between Tequila & Mezcal?
Tequila is a type of mezcal, much like how scotch and bourbon are types of whiskey.
Tequila and mezcal are both types of agave-based spirits that are popular in Mexico, but there are some key differences between the two. Tequila is made exclusively from the blue agave plant, which is primarily grown in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, about 40 miles northwest of Guadalajara. Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from any type of agave plant, and is often made using traditional, labor-intensive methods.
One of the most noticeable differences between tequila and mezcal is their flavor. Tequila is typically smooth and subtle, with hints of fruit and spices, while mezcal has a more complex, smoky flavor that comes from the roasting of the agave hearts before they are fermented and distilled.
Another difference between the two spirits is their production process. Tequila is typically made using modern industrial methods, while mezcal is often produced using traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. This can give mezcal a more authentic, artisanal character.
In general, tequila is considered to be a more refined and sophisticated spirit, while mezcal is often viewed as a more rustic and traditional drink. Both are popular in Mexico and are enjoyed around the world, so the best way to decide which one you like is to try them both and see which one suits your tastes.
