Oude Gueuze Tilquin à L'Ancienne - Cuvée Jean-Paul

Indulge in the exquisite complexity of Oude Gueuze Tilquin à L'Ancienne - Cuvée Jean-Paul, a testament to the artistry of traditional Belgian lambic blending. This unfiltered and unpasteurized gueuze is crafted by the renowned Gueuzerie Tilquin in Bierghes, a brewery dedicated to the time-honored methods of spontaneous fermentation and patient maturation in oak barrels. The "Cuvée Jean-Paul" represents a particularly elegant and refined expression of their meticulous blending process.

This gueuze blends one, two, and three-year-old lambics from Belgium's most esteemed breweries. These lambics, each with a unique character developed through wild yeast fermentation and aging, are carefully selected and blended by Pierre Tilquin to create a harmonious and balanced final product. The beer undergoes secondary fermentation in the bottle, resulting in its signature lively carbonation and evolving complexity over time.

Tasting Notes:

  • Pouring a hazy golden straw color with a persistent and delicate white head, the Oude Gueuze Tilquin à L'Ancienne - Cuvée Jean-Paul offers an intricate and inviting aroma. The nose is greeted by a captivating blend of bright, lemony acidity and barnyard funk, a hallmark of authentic lambic. Layers of earthy hay, subtle floral notes, and a hint of horse blanket mingle with a delicate fruitiness, reminiscent of white peach and green apple. A subtle mineral character adds further depth and complexity.
  • On the palate, the Cuvée Jean-Paul delivers a refreshing and vibrant experience. The initial tartness is pronounced yet elegant, balanced by a surprising softness and roundness. The flavors echo the nose, with prominent notes of lemon zest, green apple, and that characteristic rustic funk.
  • Nuances of white grape, a touch of honey, and a lingering earthy minerality unfold with each sip. The effervescence is lively and contributes to a crisp and dry finish. The complexity evolves beautifully in the glass, revealing new layers of flavor as it warms.

This gueuze of exceptional finesse and depth represents the traditional Belgian lambic style. The Cuvée Jean-Paul is a beer to be savored slowly, appreciating the intricate interplay of flavors and the dedication to craftsmanship that defines Gueuzerie Tilquin. It pairs wonderfully with rich cheeses and charcuterie or can be simply enjoyed on its own as a testament to brewing heritage.

Is all your inventory online?

We try to keep the store as updated as possible, but we always get new shipments. So if you don't see what you are looking for, send an email, and we'll check to see what Moose is hiding in the back room.

Why is beer available as in-store pick-up only?

Our temperature-controlled storage systems preserve beer's quality and flavor until pickup. By maintaining precise refrigeration, we protect each batch's unique characteristics and ensure customers receive the freshest possible product.

However, due to the challenges of maintaining consistent temperature during shipping, we exclusively offer in-store pickup for our craft beers.

What is the difference between Tequila & Mezcal?

Tequila is a type of mezcal, much like how scotch and bourbon are types of whiskey.

Tequila and mezcal are both types of agave-based spirits that are popular in Mexico, but there are some key differences between the two. Tequila is made exclusively from the blue agave plant, which is primarily grown in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, about 40 miles northwest of Guadalajara. Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from any type of agave plant, and is often made using traditional, labor-intensive methods.

One of the most noticeable differences between tequila and mezcal is their flavor. Tequila is typically smooth and subtle, with hints of fruit and spices, while mezcal has a more complex, smoky flavor that comes from the roasting of the agave hearts before they are fermented and distilled.

Another difference between the two spirits is their production process. Tequila is typically made using modern industrial methods, while mezcal is often produced using traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. This can give mezcal a more authentic, artisanal character.

In general, tequila is considered to be a more refined and sophisticated spirit, while mezcal is often viewed as a more rustic and traditional drink. Both are popular in Mexico and are enjoyed around the world, so the best way to decide which one you like is to try them both and see which one suits your tastes.
